Weightlifting will make me bulky. Myth?

A usual misconception about training and lifting heavy weights, is it will result in a bulky looking physique.

It’s true that lifting heavy weights will promote hypertrophy in muscles and a size increase but the idea of “make you bulky” isn’t true.

A lot of people (especially females) are afraid that lift heavy weights will result in the gain of a lot of muscle mass and inevitability will change their physique into something undesirable.

Men and women should use bigger weights, proper form and clean eating to optimize results.

 

 

BENEFITS OF LIFTING WEIGHTS

 

The fact is that lift heavy weights will make you stronger, reduce fat, and enhance your athletic performance.  The immediate aftermath will make you feel empowered and give you an instant mood boost.  Long-term results from lifting will not come overnight and results differ from person to person. Consistency is key when you want to make lifelong changes.

The nervous system response to weight training is more motor unit recruitment making it stronger because the brain tells the muscle to recruit more neurons.

Lifting weights not only affects your muscle tissue, it also increase the release of testosterone and human growth hormones (HGH), both of which boost your metabolism.  The amount of hormones released differ for males and females.

Lifting weights also increases the number of overall calories you burn during the day.  By adding more lean muscle, you’ll be burning calories outside of the gym even when you are just on resting mode at home.

 

MYTH BUSTED

Women can’t build muscles like men.  The simple fact is the difference in the hormone profile.  Men have more testosterone.  This is a huge factor in the capacity for muscle growth.  This tells us that women we will not turn into The Hulk.

Also as a reference, women don’t eat enough to build big muscles.  One would need to eat more calories than you burn.  New muscle tissue can’t grow from nothing.  Just for a reference, a calorie intake between 1,800 and 2,400 is necessary.  If you’re exercising, you’d need to meet the higher end of that range, to build a lot of muscle.  More if you are tall or extra active.

Don’t sweat it!!  Bulky isn’t in a near future.

For women, fortunately or unfortunately, the hormone profile allows for toning!
